Subject: pto hydraulic pump for planter question
I am wanting to run my two vacuum motors on 1780 planter off of a pto pump. I was considering a hydraboost system until I got the price for their unit. I am now thinking I should just piece the system together myself to save some money. I seen where the two motors are probably going to require around 4-5 gal/min each so I don't need a very big system. I was looking at a prince pto pump but would like to see if others have made their own system, what they all used and how it was plumbed. I currently use my 7800 for all hydraulic functions with a case drain, it has the two dials to regulate vacuum. I am just trying to figure out how to incorporate these in the new system to allow fine tuning of vacuum. Also is it better to use 540 or 1000 rpm pump? Thanks in advance.

Won't the 7810 run fans without pto pump?

It does but I want to get away from clutching on every pass to wait for it to lift. When vac fans aren't on planter raises fast.

We had to do the same thing with 1780. Inztalled Ag Leade clutch contol and no longer slow down when turning.. You will also get the benefit of saving some seed.

CENTRAL ILLINIOS

I pieced one together for a 1770 planter on a JD 8400 tractor with the pump and most of the parts coming from Surplus Center. Biggest problem was that tractor only has the big 1000 PTO and none of the pumps came that way so I had to use an adapter. Has a little wobble in it because of the adapter but been running two years with no problems. I am thinking about putting a oil cooler on it for next year because the oil will run pretty hot and with a cooler I can quit worrying about it. Bought the pump, tank, relief valve, and filter from Surplus Center then had all the hoses made locally. You will need the flow control valves to regulate vacuum for each fan if you don't have them.

Campbell what size pump did you go with and where does the relief valve get plumbed into the system?

We're running a 7200 vac this year on a great big ih 1486. The planter already had the oil cooler plumbed in but we needed a pto pump. After enough pestering and I think finding the part # ourselves, we finally got the Deere dealer to order us a pump. I think it cost about $1300. I think that pump would have enough capacity for two motors.

CENTRAL ILLINIOS

I don't remember the pump size but I can take a look at it possibly this afternoon and let you know(it is stored on another farm). I am having a hard time remembering how I plumbed in the relief valve too but I think I ran a hose from the pressure side of the pump to a tee, with one side of the tee going to the flow control valves and the other side going to the pressure relief valve that is mounted on the side of the tank. Will look at that when I get over there too.

If you had this pump hooked to a 1000 rpm pto with a double roller chain coupling, you would have about 11 gallons per minute.

You will need a flow control to get rid of some oil flow. Something like this

Plan on 10 gallon tank of oil and be ready to add a cooler if needed.

I could not find any numbers on the pump but I think it is the 5.7 cu. in. Prince listed at 22.4 GPM. Will try to upload a picture. It is plumbed like I said in the post above. I ordered it oversized so I could run with the tractor at reduced throttle and still get the flow

Did you have to install a flow divider valve to split the flow after it came out of the tee or how did you split the flow between the fan motors?

FAQs

How does a PTO hydraulic pump work? ›

Hydraulic power take-off (PTO) converts the power of the carrier engine to hydraulic power. PTO transfers the power of the engine to a hydraulic pump. The hydraulic pump produces a hydraulic oil flow and pressure.

What is the difference between a hydrostatic pump and a hydraulic pump? ›

Hydrostatic pumps are positive displacement pumps while hydrodynamic pumps can be fixed displacement pumps, in which the displacement (flow through the pump per rotation of the pump) cannot be adjusted, or variable displacement pumps, which have a more complicated construction that allows the displacement to be ...

How does a PTO water pump work? ›

PTO pumps, also called trunk pumps connect directly to the truck's driveshaft. It uses that rotary power and converts it with the PTO, into hydraulic power. The hydraulic power is used to power the PTO water pump which is typically connected on-frame and to the tank.

What is the common problem of a hydraulic pump? ›

Fluid contamination is one of the biggest causes of hydraulic pump damage and involves debris mixing with the liquid. This debris causes friction, leading to extenuated wear on the pump itself. The result is inefficiency, culminating in malfunction.

How does a PTO operate? ›

A live PTO operates through a two-stage clutch system. To engage the PTO, the clutch needs to be pressed halfway; to disengage the PTO, the clutch needs to be pressed fully. This allows the operator the ability to slow down or shift gears while the PTO remains engaged.

Does PTO run off of hydraulic fluid? ›

A hydraulic power take-off, or hydraulic PTO, is a system that transforms your vehicle's or machine's engine power into hydraulic power. Hydraulic power is the power that the hydraulic oil flow and pressure creates.

What are the three types of hydraulic pumps? ›

There are three primary types of hydraulic pumps: gear, piston, and vane pumps. These pump types are further classified based on their functions.

Do hydraulic pumps get weak? ›

With proper maintenance, most hydraulic pumps will operate smoothly for years, but eventually, the pressure inside these devices will cause failures that need to be addressed as soon as possible. Below are a few signs you should have your pump taken to a machine shop for repairs.

What is the best type of pump for use in a hydraulic system? ›

Radial Piston Pumps

The rotor powers the pistons through the cylinders and forces hydraulic fluid in and out of the cylinder. Both axial and radial piston pumps are used for high-operating pressures as they can withstand much higher pressures than hydraulic pump types.

What are the symptoms of a PTO pump failure? ›

It will "Whine","Clatter", "Click" or "Grind". Sometimes, the vehicle itself may contribute enough noise to mask the sound of the PTO and one may not notice the problem. One of the most serious problems a PTO can suffer is a cracked case. This condition can lead to oil loss and eventual transmission failure.

What is the speed of a PTO hydraulic pump? ›

The standardised PTO output of either 540 or 1,000 rpm, is, in this way, increased to optimum operating speeds for the hydraulic pumps. This gearbox and pump offer either direct or remote mounting options to the tractor P.T.O to provide independent hydraulic service.

What is the principle of PTO? ›

The PTO is engaged and disengaged using the main transmission clutch and a remote control mechanism which operates on the PTO itself. Typically, an air valve is used to engage the PTO, but a mechanical linkage, electric or hydraulic mechanism are also options.

What is the most reliable indicator of a faulty hydraulic pump? ›

Leaks are a clear sign of problems with a hydraulic pump. Pump leaks are divided into internal and external leaks. External leaks are easier to find and may take the form of pools or puddles of hydraulic fluid underneath the machine, or a spray of fluid from a pressurized line.

How do you test for a hydraulic pump leak? ›

For subtle signs of leaks, use a hydraulic flow tester, ultrasonic detector, or bench testing system to locate the leak and make repairs.

Can you bench test a hydraulic pump? ›

The conventional way of bench-testing a hydraulic pump is 100% energy loss. That is, the pump is loaded with a relief valve, which means all input power (pressure x flow) is converted to heat. While such heat generation is not ideal, it can be managed.

What is the first step in troubleshooting a failed hydraulic pump? ›

The first step is to detect the problem. Begin by installing a gauge at the pump outlet or portable pressure meter that easily couples into system piping. If there is no flow in the system, one or several problems could be at play. Perform these checks to figure out what is wrong with your hydraulic pump.
