BLACK AND WHITE

     Oil      18 x 24       1983          Private Collection

After years of living on the boat our life was slowly gravitating back toward the shore and my mother made us an offer we couldn’t refuse, so we made a commitment to come live with her after we were totally finished sailing. We spent the winter of 1983 ashore and during that time my mother decided to renovate the old garage into a studio. Although we had two more years of cruising, having the studio and a place to live waiting for us made me quite happy as I was beginning to feel very out of touch with my artwork.

To test the light in my new workspace I thought that a very stark, black and white painting would show values more than a lot of color, so I set up a black Wedgwood tea pot and a white hobnail pitcher and went to work.
